The Keydet wrestling team had a 3-4 record after traveling to Boiling Springs, North Carolina, Jan. 31.
There, the VMI wrestling team split a Southern Conference tri-meet at Gardner-Webb University, defeating Bellarmine University (Kentucky) 37-9 before falling to GWU 29-11.
Job Chishko ’23 earned a pair of victories on the day at 149 pounds—one by pin and one by technical fall. The Keydets won the first four matches against Bellarmine, with Cliff Conway ’21 pinning his foe in just 2:38 at 125. Luke Fegley ’24 (5-0) and Freddy Junko ’24 (9-0, major decision) followed with wins at 133 and 141, respectively, before Chishko won his first match in only 45 seconds by pin.
Blake Showers ’24 won by pin in 2:43 at 157, and Zach Brown ’23 (5-0) and Tyler Mousaw ’24 (7-0) earned victories at 184 and 197. Solomon Harris ’23 won by pin in 1:39 at 285.
Chishko rolled to a 17-0 technical fall win against GWU in 4:23, and Mousaw won by forfeit. Brown suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat, as did Jon Hoover ’23 (2-0) at 165. Josh Yost ’23 won a pair of extra matches by technical falls at 149 pounds. Chase Mielnik ’24 scored a pin in an extra match against Bellarmine in 4:31 at 197.

VMI hosted Appalachian State University and The Citadel in Cormack Hall Feb. 5. The Southern Conference championships are scheduled for Feb. 28 in Boone, North Carolina, followed by the NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Missouri, March 20.
