VMI swimming and diving closed out the Keydet Invite with wins for both men’s and women’s squads at Goodall Pool Nov. 16, 2024.

In two days, the Keydets broke 17 team records and set 34 new program top-10 times. The men posted a massive 217-34 victory while the women came up on top, 148-101, for the most wins in 7 years and earned the first female dual meet win at Goodall Pool in program history. On top of that, the women also tied for the most wins in a single season.

Day One

The Keydets have broken 11 team records and tied two records between both men’s and women’s squads. VMI men’s swimming and diving led the meet over Southern Virginia, 110-16, while VMI women’s swimming and diving led the Knights, 75-47.

Kicking off the record-breaking evening was the women’s 200 medley relay consisting of Noelle Tong ’26, Walden Wilder ’27, Emerson Cosner ’28, and Mackenzie Byrne ’28, who swam to a solid time of 1:49.47. Cosner would later smash the rat and team records in the 200 butterfly (2:10.27) right before Byrne earned a new 50 freestyle rat and team record-breaking time (23.75).

On the boards, Isabelle Haer ’28 nabbed a 259.65 score on the 1-meter dive, etching her name in the record book with a new rat record.

For the men, Stephen Russell ’28 tallied a new 1,000 freestyle rat and team record (9:33.37), while Jack Mills ’28 posted a top conference time and new rat and team record in the 200 freestyle (1:38.17). Sam Castle ’27 broke the team 100 backstroke record (49.90).

Caleb Wolf ’28 tied Mill’s rat and team record in the 200 butterfly (1:53.32).

Day Two

VMI set six team records on day two of the invitational. Byrne added a new rat and team record in the 100 freestyle (52.93), with Wilder breaking the team record in the 200 breaststroke (2:30.01).

Mills continued his dominant freshman campaign by destroying the rat and team record in the 100 butterfly (49.70). The final record of the day went to the rat 200 freestyle relay team consisting of Sam Calder ’28, Russell, Joshua Wolf ’28, and Mills.

VMI swimming and diving had two Kedyet rat swimmers—Calder and Mills—competing in the 2024 Toyota U.S. Open Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center in Greensboro, North Carolina, Dec. 4–7.
