High school seniors considering Virginia Military Institute are now offered a more streamlined approach to applying. First-year students applying to VMI can now do so through Common App, a college application platform used by more than three million applicants, teachers, counselors and advisors across the United States and around the world each year.
More than 1,000 institutions worldwide admit students through Common App. By joining this community, VMI simplifies the application process for students interested in applying to multiple schools and better serves applicants from underserved and underrepresented populations. Common App is meant to reduce barriers students face when applying to college. Students utilizing Common App only fill out one application and provide one set of supporting documents to apply to multiple schools.
In addition to a single application, Common App provides students with financial aid and scholarship information, virtual mentors, and online portfolios. It also includes a vast library of counselor resources in English and Spanish.
“Our goal with joining Common App is to provide a clear and easy path for students looking for a senior military college education to find and apply to VMI,” said Lt. Col. Joe Hagy, VMI director of admissions. “This new partnership will make it possible for students currently utilizing Common App to go straight into the VMI application process. Through this tool, students not only apply to multiple institutions—they also gain information and knowledge they can use during the college search process.”
First-year students interested in applying to VMI through the Common App can create an account immediately because accounts roll over from year to year. VMI will begin accepting applications Aug. 1, 2023, for the fall 2024 entry term.
In addition to Common App, VMI continues to accept the VMI system application. The VMI application is also the main application used by college transfer students applying to the Institute.
Both the Common App and VMI application, along with complete admission process details for all new student applicants, are available on the Apply page at vmi.edu.
