Looking for a strong start to the 2020-21 season, the VMI rifle teams accomplished the task with solid marks Sept. 26 at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
Navy won the match with 4658 aggregate points (2305 smallbore, 2353 air rifle) and was followed by the VMI mixed team with 4493 points (2207 SB, 2286 AR) and the VMI women’s team (4206 aggregate; 2003 SB, 2203 AR).
Simon Krauthamer ’22 led the way for the VMI mixed rifle team with a fourth-place 572 smallbore tally and was followed by Jessica Hankin’s [’22] 555 in ninth place. James Doucett ’23 also earned a top 10 mark with a 553 smallbore.
In the women’s smallbore, Savanah Diamond ’22 led the way with a 542 for 13th place overall and was followed by Claire Lee’s [’22] 15th-place mark of 534. Maxine Gray-Barth ’24 (466) and Cassidy Dufour ’23 (461) also scored team points for the category.
Krauthamer led the mixed team in the air rifle with a fourth-place tally of 557 points and was pursued closely by teammate Doucett, who logged a 574 for sixth place. Samantha Reid ’22 (8th, 573) and Jason Gardner ’22 (11th, 564) also had good marks.
Diamond led the VMI women’s team in the air rifle competition with a 558 score for 15th place overall, with sophomore Sarah Robertson ’23 close behind in 18th place with 555 points. Lee (551, 19th) and Gray-Barth (550, 20th) also scored points for the squad.
The Keydets returned to action Oct. 10 at home, facing The Citadel, a match previously scheduled for Sept. 20 in Lexington. They split that match.
The Citadel mixed team earned the win with 4558 aggregate points (2248 SB, 2310 AR) and was followed by the VMI mixed team with 4471 points (2210 SB, 2261 AR). The VMI women’s team came in third with 4309 points (2100 SB, 2209 AR) while The Citadel women finished with 4282 (2070 SB, 2212 AR).
