Jamaal Walton ’07

Jamaal Walton ’07 recently returned to his alma mater as the new director of intercollegiate athletics. In a conversation with Andrew Deal ’12, Keydet Club chief operating officer, Walton reflected on his journey to VMI and his experiences as a cadet-athlete, as well as how he is bringing that together as VMI’s athletics director.

Walton emphasized the importance of providing cadet-athletes with the best possible experience, something he witnessed firsthand through the support of the Keydet Club during his own cadetship.

Walton’s career in college athletics has taken him to various levels, from Savannah State to power-five programs like Oklahoma and Alabama.

Throughout his journey, he has learned the importance of treating people well, fostering a positive attitude, and empowering his staff. Now, Walton is focused on aligning the athletic department with the Institute’s overall mission, strengthening relationships with the community, and exploring new revenue-generating opportunities to enhance the cadet-athlete experience.
