The Southern Conference announced its Student-Athlete of the Week Wednesday, Sept. 21, with VMI football’s Collin Ironside ’24 earning the award.
Ironside entered the Sept. 17 game against Cornell University as a quarterback and helped engineer a comeback effort against Cornell Big Red. The redshirt sophomore went 16 for 18 with a career-high of 275 yards while passing and rushing for a touchdown.
A native of Knoxville, Tennessee, Ironside maintains a 4.0 GPA as a business and economics major and has previously earned SoCon Honor Roll status.
With under six minutes to play, a 41-yard dart to Leroy Thomas ’23 set up Hunter Rice ’25 for a rushing touchdown, followed by a touchdown pass to Chance Knox ’24 on the next possession. Getting the ball back with 1:28 left on the clock to play, Ironside marched the team down the field and registered his first career rushing touchdown, pulling VMI within one score with five seconds remaining. But VMI would run out of time and fall 28-22 to Cornell.
