Grapplers Capture Four Weight Classes in Opener

The VMI wrestling team opened the 2021 wrestling season in impressive fashion Sunday, Jan. 3, 2021, capturing four weight classes at the Bucknell University Round Robin with Long Island University.

The hosts had the top team score by a narrow margin over VMI 233.5-187.5 with LIU in third with 123. Zach Brown ’23 was unscored upon at 184 in four victories. He won two matches quickly by fall (1:05 and 1:14) and also had a 16-0 technical fall victory.

Tyler Mousaw ’24 outlasted two Bucknell opponents (9-2 and 7-0) to take the title at 197. Job Chishko ’23 rolled to the championship at 149 pounds, winning his matches 18-1, 6-0 and 7-1. Josh Yost ’23 also picked up a victory in the weight class.

Seth Fillers ’23 won all four of his matches to take the top spot at 157 pounds, including a major decision win. Blake Showers ’24 came in second at 157, earning a 37-second win via pin over his Bucknell opponent. Chase Mielnik ’24 picked up two wins at 184 as well, including a 19-2 technical fall win. Jon Hoover ’23 earned a win at 165, as did Joel Diaz ’24 at 174. Freddy Junko ’24 and Noah Roulo ’23 each won a match at 141.

VMI hosted Sacred Heart University Jan. 9 in Cormack Hall and will continue at home for the next two matches versus Presbyterian College (Jan. 16) and Campbell University (Jan. 23) before going on the road to face Davidson College and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Davidson, North Carolina, Jan. 23.
