On his first morning at VMI, Ed Johnson ’79 didn’t wake up on time.
“I was tired from the night before,” he said. The difficult-to-ignore face and voice of a cadre corporal finally roused him. After that rough beginning, Johnson learned many things at VMI. He learned how to lead different people in different situations.
“You need to understand their concerns, what motivates them,” he said, and use different approaches for different people to accomplish the end goal.
“I got way more from VMI than I could ever give back,” he said.
He also learned to balance an overflowing load of commitments: Academics, Division I athletics, personal life “and sleep.”
“There are a lot of young men and women out there who can’t come to VMI if they don’t have financial assistance,” said the regular Keydet Club donor. “That’s why I give to VMI.”
