VMI’s men’s swimming and diving team made a significant leap in performance at the College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association of America National Invitational Championships, placing 26th overall with 102 points—an impressive improvement from their 35th-place finish in 2024 with just 16 points. Several standout performances contributed to this success, including individual and relay records, at the CSCAA Championship March 13–15, 2025.
Jack Mills ’28 secured a 14th-place finish in the 200 free. Stephen Russell ’28 had a strong meet, placing 19th in the 200 free and 11th in the 1000 free. His performance in the 1000 free was especially notable, as he set a new team record, breaking his own mark from the America East Conference Championships.
The relay teams also played a crucial role in the team’s success. The 200 medley relay team of Josh Wolf ’28, Kayleb Eldridge ’28, Brayden Green ’28, and Toby Schwenk ’28 placed 23rd. In the 800 free relay, Sam Calder ’28, Wolf, Russell, and Mills put together a strong performance, finishing 11th and setting a new rat record.
The momentum continued with the 400 free relay, where Calder, Mills, Wolf, and Russell secured 17th place while breaking the rat record. Additionally, Calder’s lead-off split in the event set a new rat record in the 100 free. The 400 medley relay team of Russell, Mills, Wolf, and Calder also put up a strong showing, placing 27th and setting another rat record.
The CSCAA results highlight a season of tremendous growth for the team, with record-breaking performances and a significant rise in rankings.
Additionally, the men’s and women’s teams were named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America Teams for their outstanding academic achievements. To earn this recognition, teams are required to achieve a GPA of above 3.0.
