The Cadet-Athlete Experience

1:15

Cadet-athletes are the epitome of VMI’s Three-Legged Stool. Each day, these young men and women balance academics, athletics, and military duties—learning along the way that time management, discipline, and dedication are key to success in all areas. When asked about the joys and challenges of their uncommon path, cadet-athletes overwhelmingly say they are grateful to have had the chance to play their sports at the highest collegiate level, NCAA Division I.

In this video, you’ll hear from Cadet Delilah Martindale ’25, a member of the women’s soccer team; A.J. Stamos ’24, a former member of the lacrosse team; and three current or former members of the Keydet football team: Collin Ironside ’23, former quarterback; Mark Shelton ’24, a running back who served as the 2023–24 regimental commander; and Will Reid ’24, offensive lineman.
