Ed Johnson '79 Chief Operating Officer, VMI Alumni Association
The Chief Operating Officer of the VMI Alumni Association is responsible for the direction of a comprehensive self‐governed Alumni Association of nearly 26,000. The COO reports to the Chief Executive Officer of the VMI Alumni Agencies and also supports the President of the VMI Alumni Association Board of Directors. Responsibilities include formulation of the policies, goals, objectives, programs, and procedures of the Association. The COO provides oversight of Association programs and staff to ensure they meet the goals and objectives of the Association’s strategic plan.
Matthew Hart '99 Senior Director of Alumni Programs
The senior director of alumni programs provides dynamic and creative leadership, supporting the chief operating officer in key Alumni Association initiatives including support for new cadet recruiting, connecting with current cadets, and synchronizing outreach and engagement with class agents. The senior director also assists in presenting the vision of the Alumni Association to various groups, boards, chapters, and reunion classes, and plans affinity reunions, board meetings, and the annual Volunteer Leaders Conference.
Leeanne Murphy Alumni Engagement Officer
The alumni engagement officer provides program support to the senior director of alumni programs and the chief operating officer in optimizing all aspects of the VMI chapter experience: Engagement, participation, and involvement. The engagement officer plans and executes chapter events and works with chapter leadership to support initiatives, shares resources and best practices for all chapters to connect with the Institute and other alumni, and administers the VMI provisional appointment program, which connects new generations of the VMI family to the Institute.
Jacob Peace '22 Director of Alumni Engagement
The director of alumni engagement assists with the planning and implementation of strategies, programs and projects that increase alumni chapter involvement and engagement to the Institute and the Alumni Association. The director of alumni engagement also works to support our alumni chapters as well as other stakeholders on post including the office of career services and the commandant’s office.
Norma Robinson Executive Assistant/Office Manager
The office manager provides assistance to all alumni services and programs. Working directly for and closely with the chief operating officer, this position assists with the day-to-day operations of the office.
Justin Tammelin '09 Director of Alumni Networking
Reporting to the COO of the VMI Alumni Association, the director of alumni networking will assist with the planning and implementation of strategies, programs and projects that increase alumni mentorship, career guidance, military transition assistance and networking. The director of alumni networking will work to support alumni as well as other stakeholders on post, including the office of career services and the commandant’s office.
The VMI Alumni Association
organizes the Alumni of the Virginia Military Institute in one general body, so as to better keep alive the memories of Institute life, and by their united efforts to more efficiently aid in the promotion of the welfare of the Institute, and the successful prosecution of its education purposes in the future.
