The Southern Conference announced its Spring 2023 Academic All-Southern Conference team, with 12 VMI Keydets earning a total of 13 awards.
To be eligible for the academic all-conference team, student-athletes must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average at the conclusion of the spring semester and were required to compete in at least one-half of their teams’ competitions during the recently concluded campaign. In addition, the student-athletes must have successfully completed at least three semesters at their institutions, making true freshmen and first-year transfers ineligible for inclusion.
The 12 Keydets were Brett Cook ’24, Caden Plummer ’25, Ty Swaim ’24, Sam Wolfe ’23, Zach Diller ’23, Andrew Hirneisen ’24, Kevin Linko ’23, Brian Tavenner ’25, Charles Male ’24, Cassidy Dufour ’23, Maxine Gray-Barth ’24, and Jon Hoover ’23.
Four hundred and seventy-five student-athletes earned 595 spots on the Spring 2023 Academic All-Southern Conference Team, the league office announced.
“Institutions in the Southern Conference emphasize education,” Michael Cross, SoCon commissioner, said. “As a league, we’re proud to honor and recognize the academic performance of each of the college athletes named to the Academic All-SoCon team. The dedication and diligence necessary to balance classroom performance and athletic commitments represents uncommon excellence.”
The sports of men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, rifle, wrestling, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, baseball, and softball are represented on the Spring Academic All-SoCon team.
